L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge is bringing the bygone days of the north woods supper club to the Chicago area each week with Wisconsin Fridays.

Beginning Friday, February 24 – just in time for the start of Lent – a special menu of iconic supper club favorites will be available at lunch and dinner.

“A story I read last fall about the Midwest supper clubs fading into the sunset made us think about featuring some of the specific dishes that speak to that era,” said Terry Lawler, general manager. “These were the restaurants you’d find along dirt roads to the vacation homes in the north woods of Wisconsin. The food would be simple and honest along with American classics, a concept that inspired this restaurant.”

Wisconsin Fridays start with the Wisconsin Old Fashioned (Korbel brandy, orange, and maraschino cherry) for $5 and Schlitz drafts for $2.

Fried cheese curds coated with Ritz crackers and saltines honors the supper club tradition as an appetizer as well as the Wisconsin Smorgasbord of smoked sausages, deviled eggs, kidney bean salad, Merkt’s cheese ball, corn relish, house cured pickles, carrots, celery and roasted red pepper cream cheese dip.

There’s also a smoked sausage platter featuring smoked bratwurst and knockwurst, German potato salad, braised cabbage and bacon, and homemade coleslaw.

The Wisconsin Friday menu offers two types of fish fry. There’s Schlitz beer battered fried haddock with potato pancake and coleslaw and the Famous Fried Lake Perch with salt and vinegar fries, homemade coleslaw and tartar sauce. (How ‘famous’ is famous? Click here to find out.)

For dessert, expect a tradition of the Wisconsin State Fair for the last 150 years: the cream puff – split and fluffy – piled high with whipped cream. To learn more about the fabled Wisconsin supper clubs, navigate here
